Bowie State University Strives to Expand International Partnerships

Royal Delegation from Nigeria Visits BSU to Initiate Student Recruitment

(BOWIE, Md.) – In an effort to continue expanding its international partnerships, Bowie State University hosted a king from Nigeria, West Africa, this weekend to lay the groundwork for a partnership that would enable students from that area to pursue degrees at Bowie State, especially in nursing and science.

King Oba David Olusola Olatunde’s visit was arranged through the Ikun-Ekiti Descendants Union Overseas (FIDUO), an organization seeking to promote socio-economic development in the Ikun-Ekiti community in Nigeria, a country that boasts one of the strongest economies in West Africa.

Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux and Provost Weldon Jackson joined faculty, administrators and students to welcome the royal delegation of more than 15 people, and praise the university’s strengths in delivering high-quality education and research for diverse learners. The group also toured the state-of-the-art Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing.

As Bowie State’s new president, Dr. Breaux has expressed her vision for the university to build partnerships with local and global communities that create opportunities for students to succeed. The royal visit represents a strategic expansion of the university’s international engagement.

The newly formed Office of International Programs will act as a liaison to develop agreements to increase the university’s recruitment efforts for international students, as well as to create opportunities for faculty and student exchanges with institutions abroad.

“As a result of the king’s visit, the university will continue to work with the Ikun-Ekiti Descendants Union Overseas to formalize a student recruitment partnership,” said Senior Director Robert Batten. “Our goal is to provide students from all over the world with the opportunity to have an exceptional educational experience at Bowie State.”
