University Reaccreditation Design Praised as a Model of Excellence

Bowie State Prepares for Successful Eight-Year Reaccreditation

(BOWIE, Md.) – In the continued progress toward a successful eight-year reaccreditation, the Bowie State University team that is leading the effort received a notable achievement by receiving honors on its self-study design from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the university’s regional accrediting body.

The university’s Self-Study design was recognized as a model of excellence and shared with other institutions attending the commission’s Self-Study Institute last month. The Middle States Self-Study process provides an opportunity for Bowie State to demonstrate that it meets the standards of accreditation and requirements for Middle States accreditation. It also provides a way for the university to examine what it does well and where there are opportunities for improvement.

The next phase of the Middle States Self-Study process includes work by volunteers in several workgroups that will engage in the critical research and information-gathering process to prepare reports supporting the university’s reaccreditation. The workgroups will closely evaluate how well the university meets each Middle States standard, with a focus on the three major priorities from the Racing to Excellence Strategic Plan: academic excellence, student success and long-term viability of the university.

Undergoing a productive and inclusive self-study will reinforce the impact Bowie State has on the surrounding community, external partnerships and its mission to empower a diverse population of students as they prepare for careers, lifelong learning and civic responsibility.
