Computer Science Department Celebrates Experiential Learning Day

Student Research Highlighted as Henry Luce Foundation Visits Campus

(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State University hosted members of the Henry Luce Foundation while computer science students presented their research for Experiential Learning Day. Projects included using artificial intelligence to sharpen unmanned aerial drone awareness, using data to study oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay and enhancing image encryption with machine learning.

The event highlighted the students’ achievements and signaled the growing connection between the foundation and the university’s computer science department.  Projects shared by students included using artificial intelligence to sharpen unmanned aerial drone awareness, using data to study oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay and enhancing image encryption with machine learning.

Dr. Aida Gureghian, the foundation’s director of leadership programs, addressed the audience on the history of the Clare Booth Luce Program for Women in STEM, its namesake and the hope that, in time, the gap for the number of women and people of color in the STEM fields will be closed. She also stressed that students have the foundation’s support as they work to establish themselves as STEM professionals. 

“You are part of a community,” Dr. Gureghian said. “All of these groups and individuals are here to ensure we’re supporting this community of learners. Continue to engage in this world of technology, engineering and computer science that needs your perspective and efforts.” 

Last year, the foundation awarded Bowie State with almost $300,000 through its Clare Booth Luce program, which aims to increase opportunities for women in STEM career fields.
