(BOWIE, Md.) — On a sunny Sunday afternoon, walkers, runners, and joggers gathered at Parking Lot J at Bowie State University to participate in the second annual Bulldog 5K Walk/Run, an event that brings together students, faculty, and supporters to raise funds for student athletes. All proceeds from this year’s event will support the development of the athletic nutrition lounge.

Past events to support athletics include the Bulldog Golf Classic. This fall will mark the 15th year the event has been held to support the athletics department’s goal of establishing an ongoing student scholarship program.

“I’m truly excited about how our 5K Walk/Run has taken off,” said Clyde Doughty, Bowie State’s vice president for intercollegiate athletics and recreation. “Under the leadership of Dr. Jolisa Williams and in collaboration with our Office of Philanthropic Engagement, we intend on growing the event each year and involving more individuals and community organizations.”

"May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and this event helped to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity," said Jennifer Coke, Bowie State’s executive director of philanthropic engagement. "Our athletics department does not receive any state funding, which makes our 5K Walk/Run even more crucial for supporting the student-athletes who represent our university."

Participants looped around the campus to complete their 5K Walk/Run which is equivalent to 3.1 miles. Runners enjoyed a beautiful day as they made their way through the university’s treelined paths, soaking in the scenic views across campus. The event provided a great mixture of exercise and social engagement with alumni, administrators and BSU supporters.
