(BOWIE, Md.)—At over 80 years old, Wilfred Gray shows no signs of slowing down. As the owner of SyDar Printing of DC, LLC, a minority-owned veteran-run union shop, he has spent decades blending business with a steadfast commitment to education and community service. His story is one of perseverance, opportunity, and an unwavering belief in the power of higher education.

Gray’s journey began in Buffalo, New York, where he spent his early twenties working in steel mills. Realizing the mills weren’t his calling, he pursued higher education at the University of Buffalo at 40, a decision encouraged by his sister, Constance. That choice set him on a path of professional growth and personal transformation.

After earning his degree, Gray faced challenges breaking into the workforce. He encountered racial discrimination and professional roadblocks but remained determined. Through resilience and hard work, he eventually secured a role in the printing industry, learning the business from the ground up.

Years later, he founded SyDar Printing, named after his granddaughters, Sydney and Darian. Today, the company provides high-quality printing and mailing services to federal and district governments, as well as commercial clients.

Beyond his business success, Gray is committed to uplifting young people, particularly students at Bowie State University. Over the years, he has hired students, offering them hands-on experience, competitive wages, and mentorship. One such student, Jazmyne McGirt, a Bowie State business major, began working for Gray in July.

A determined and driven young professional, McGirt quickly made an impact—helping SyDar Printing secure a $7 million contract, a testament to both her talent and Gray’s philosophy of investing in young people.

“She’s incredible,” Gray said. “She understands the work, takes initiative, and isn’t afraid to step up. I just gave her the opportunity—she made it happen.”

McGirt, who plans to pursue a career in business and government contracting, credits Gray for providing invaluable experience. “Working with Mr. Gray has been life-changing,” she said. “He pushes me to think bigger and never settle.”

Gray’s support for students extends beyond employment. He provides mentorship, professional development, and resources, such as tickets to Georgetown basketball games, to inspire and reward hard work. He is dedicated to building confidence and opening doors for others, just as others once did for him.

In addition to his work in printing and education, Gray has a passion for skiing, a sport he took up at age 50. He approaches it with the same determination that has defined his career—overcoming fears, learning from experience, and embracing new challenges.

Looking ahead, Gray remains focused on growing SyDar Printing and continuing to support students. His story, along with McGirt’s success, stands as a powerful example that with hard work, education, and a commitment to others, lasting success is achievable.
