Areas of expertise and research: Visual & Social Design with an emphasis on Social Justice and Creative Resistance; Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Photography: Fine Art, Portraiture, Digital, Documentary, Experimental, Visual Culture, Art & Design Activism and Advocacy

Jennifer White-Johnson is a photographer and designer, with a passion for arts education. Each semester at Bowie State University, she assigns social design projects that encourage her students to use their art to inspire discourse around complex environmental and societal challenges. Jennifer views her own art as an interactive, and ever-evolving, learning tool. She runs a studio practice called JT Photo & Design, and her clients include educational institutions, independent artists, and community organizations like the Creative Alliance at The Patterson in Baltimore. Her photography and design work has been featured in numerous print, online publications and creative collaborative projects, including the Washington Post, DC Metro Theater Arts and in two Grammy nominated visual designs. She was also a nominee for Baltimore Photographer of the Year by RAWartists, an international indie arts organization. 

Recent Faculty Highlights:

  1. April 7, 2017 - Light City Baltimore/Design Lab featured speaker, Topic: Design Justice and Creative Resistance.
  2. Oct 6–8 2017 - Arranged, facilitated and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design Black in Design Conference with four VCDMA Students from the Bowie State AIGA student chapter board - This conference included key-note talks and workshops from top designers, architects, urban planners, social designers, and community builders
  3. Oct 20-21, 2017 Partnered with AIGA (Professional Association for Design) Baltimore and DC Design chapters to organize, host an artist talk organize a master class featuring artist, designer and Former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, Emory Douglas.
  4. As the AIGA student chapter faculty advisor and AIGA DC Chapter member, Jennifer established a Portfolio Internship development partnership with diversity and inclusion initiative firm, DesignExplorr and com Design Department
  5. Formed a Successful partnership relationship formed with the University of Maryland College Park & The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center - Resulted in the creation of a Live unity Mural painting created at the Next Now fest with Prof. Gina Lewis New Media & Public Art and Installations Course and documented Fall 2017 by the ART 353 Photojournalism Course
