Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)

ATI TEAS Requirement for Admission to the Bowie State University (BSU) Nursing Program

What is the TEAS?

The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a national standardized test that provides assessment data regarding a student’s overall academic preparedness for nursing school. The TEAS is a computerized test comprised of multiple-choice questions. Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) developed the TEAS.Information for the TEAS is located on line at www.atitesting.com or by calling 800-667-7531.

The BSU Nursing Program will ONLY accept the latest version of the TEAS.

Applicants will not be considered for admission to the nursing program without the results of their TEAS exam.

You must create an ATI Account prior to the test date, and save your username and password for the test date.

Test results must be submitted electronically to the BSU Department of Nursing, directly from ATI. You must contact ATI to request that your results be made available to the BSU Department of Nursing.

Your "Total Score" must be 65% or higher to be considered for admission.

TEAS FAQs

What is the academic content on the TEAS?

There are four subtests included on the TEAS examination:  Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English.  The Reading subtest includes paragraph comprehension, inferences, and conclusions. The Math subtest covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages and ratio/proportion. The Science subtest includes scientific reasoning, human body science, earth and physical science. The English subtest measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, words and spelling.

How long is the test?

The TEAS contains 170 multiple-choice questions that take approximately 3 ½ hours or 209 minutes to complete. The use of personal calculators is not permitted. A calculator is embedded within the exam. The test monitor will provide scratch paper and pencils. No electronic devices (cell phone, tablets, iPod, and iPad, etc) are permitted during the exam.

What is a passing score on the TEAS for BSU?

Your ATI Academic Preparedness Level must be at least proficient at no less than 65%, advanced, or exemplary to be eligible for admission to the Bowie State University Nursing Program. 

How will I know how I performed on this test?

Applicants will have access to their individual TEAS score reports within 24 hours of completion of the exam. Students can access their score reports by logging into www.atitesting.com.

Can I take the TEAS more than once?

The TEAS can be taken two times in a calendar year. Students must wait at least 30 days before retaking the exam. If the test is retaken before the end of the 30-day waiting period, the results will not be considered valid.

When I took the TEAS, ATI sent the results to me. Can I submit that report with my application to BSU Nursing Program?

No, you must contact ATI and request that your results be sent directly to BSU Department of Nursing. 

How can I prepare for the TEAS?

There are practice assessments and a study manual available for purchase at www.atitesting.com. The study manual provides sample questions and general information in the areas of Reading, Math, Science, and English.

How do I register for the TEAS?

You can register for the TEAS by going to www.atitesting.com. You will be required to create a user name and password. 

Registrations will be accepted up to the day before the test (space permitting).

Other important items for nursing students

  1. You will be required to show a picture ID to the test administrator. Acceptable forms of ID are a driver’s license, passport, or state-issued ID.
  2. The test will begin and end at the scheduled time. If you arrive late, you will not be permitted to take the test and will forfeit the payment of the test.
