Adjustments to Sick Leave & Telework Protocols

Bowie State University is continuing to adjust operating procedures in response to the growing coronavirus public health situation. Stringent measures must be taken to continue delivering academic instruction, research and business services, while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our campus community. In that regard, faculty and staff are urged to stay at home if they are sick. The coronavirus is thought to spread via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes or between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).

Employees who are absent for two days or more are asked to take the following steps:

Faculty:

  • Contact your department chairperson by phone or email to share the nature of the illness if you are experiencing measurable coughing, a fever or difficulty breathing
  • Seek medical attention
  • Remain quarantined for 14 days off campus, but without the loss of pay

Staff:

  • Contact your unit head (e.g., director or AVP) by phone or email to share the nature of the illness if you are experiencing measurable coughing, a fever or difficulty breathing
  • Seek medical attention
  • Remain quarantined for 14 days off campus, but without the loss of pay

Check with your supervisor this week about possible telework options, should it be necessary to restrict campus access in the near future. If you can telework from an off-campus location, please plan to follow the university’s interim telework policy.

Protect Yourself and Others

It is important that everyone take steps to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, especially to protect those who are more vulnerable. Here are some steps you could take:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water (sanitizer, if water isn’t available)
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home while you are sick and avoid close contact with others
  • Cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing
