Bowie State University is moving to Blackboard Ultra Format
Anthology, the parent holding company of Blackboard, has announced that effective December 31, 2026, it will be sunsetting permanently the “Learn” version of Blackboard. This is the original format used by Bowie State for many years. Anthology has made it clear to all universities using Blackboard in America that they must transition all courses to the Ultra format by December 31, 2026. The following is the proposed timeline and important target points developed (in conjunction with Anthology and its offered resources) so as to ensure an easy and stressless transition of Bowie State courses and with limited disruption to faculty and students:
Timelines and Target Points
- Summer 2025: Focus via diverse communication channels (email, teams, zoom, in-person meetings) to get the message and timelines across to all departments and programs and faculty.
- Academic Year 2025-2026 (through Summer 2026): Install a gradual, progressive, and rational schedule in which the transition of courses into the Ultra format will be completed. Teams from Academic Transformation, Academic Computing, and Anthology will be available and diligent in enacting the transition and alleviating any and all concerns of faculty, programs, and departments. Throughout the entire year individual meetings with ALL departments and
programs will be held to make sure the process of transition is continuing smoothly and without incident. Problems will be addressed and fixed. - August 15, 2026: All courses across all programs at Bowie State University will be in the Ultra format. Transition is complete.
- Fall semester 2026: “Tweaking/Revision period,” as in, these four months will be used to ensure all transitions have been successful and all faculty feel comfortable and competent in seeing and utilizing their courses in the new format.
