Protecting Our Community: Updates
Implementation of Safety Training and Additional Resources Underway
The Bowie State University Police Department thanks members of the campus community who have participated in safety talks and training sessions over the past several weeks designed to increase understanding of everyone’s role in keeping our campus safe. Progress is evident in the growing number of persons adhering to the guidance of “if you see something, say something, and report it to police.” Protecting our community is everyone’s responsibility.
Active Shooter Training
In partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), BSU Police will provide the second session of the Active Shooter Attack Prevention and Preparedness training to students on Dec. 8, 2023, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the James E. Proctor (JEP) Building, Room 102. The two-hour session will allow individuals to learn and practice techniques, tools and tactics that may be used if they are ever in an active shooter incident. The first training session was provided to faculty and staff on Nov. 14. If you were unable to attend the session, FBI resources and videos are available at this link. Additional training opportunities will be forthcoming.
Installation of Metal Detectors
As part of efforts to increase security measures on the campus, plans are in place to install metal detectors at the Student Center and Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex in Spring 2024. These locations typically receive the most off-campus visitors for large events. Consideration of additional locations is still under review.
These and other physical safety enhancements contribute to the university’s efforts to assure that all reasonable precautions are in place to minimize the risk of threats to the campus community, and to be prepared to respond when something does occur. It requires a team effort from every member of our Bulldog community.
