A Message from the President

Welcome Back – Moving Forward as One Community
As classes resume for this semester, I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for your cooperation during this unprecedented time for our historic university. Homecoming has always been a joyful event where we come together as a community to celebrate the return of our alumni and to engage in long-standing traditions. And indeed, during this year’s Homecoming, 27 events were held during the week-long celebration. It was at the conclusion of a joyous week that our campus was shaken by the needless act of violence.
The Maryland State Police Department is leading the investigation to identify and hold accountable the individuals involved in the incident. Fortunately, those who were injured are recovering and law enforcement conveyed there is no ongoing threat to the campus. Our own BSU Department of Police and Public Safety is also participating in the investigation.
So, how are we moving forward? We began the week following Homecoming with a Community Conversation to begin to help one another and our campus community to heal—to reclaim our community. Additional listening sessions have been held with faculty, students, staff, parents and families and alumni. I want to thank all who were able to participate to share ideas and suggestions. Informed by members of our campus we are moving ahead to reclaim our campus, and find the solutions for our campus and our larger community to live and learn in a safe environment.
We are moving into a new era for our beloved BSU with recognition of the rise of violence in our society that must be addressed. To that end, Bowie State University has taken additional measures for the safety and security of the campus, as we continue to support the health and well-being of our community members. For a list of measures we have taken to address safety on the campus, please see my earlier email (October 13 Safety Message).
Following this message, you will also hear more about activities and programs offered to facilitate greater physical and emotional health. As we work together for the healing of our campus community you are invited to join one of our shared governance groups to contribute your ideas to address safety and security as well as the health and well-being of our campus community. Please contact the following representatives:

As generations before, we shall not let any single event diminish the strengths, excellence and achievements realized over 150 years. Instead, across the spectrum of research and innovative academic programs at Bowie State University lies the answers to life’s pressing issues. Rather than retreat, I ask that we continue to serve as a beacon of hope and help find solutions.
Let there be no doubt we will move ahead to fulfill our mission and to deliver access and affordability to a quality education for this and future generations. Rest assured we are determined also to advance our Racing to Excellence strategic plan to achieve our top priorities of academic excellence, student success and the long-term viability of the university.
With each member of our campus community doing their part, Bowie State University will continue to light the way and be the flame of faith and torch of truth for generations of learners to come.
With much appreciation,
Aminta H. Breaux
President
