Condolences on the Passing of Dr. George C. Simmons
It is with great sadness that I share news of the Dec. 30, 2021 passing of Dr. George C. Simmons, a renowned scholar who spent many of his later years compiling “The History of Bowie State University: 1865 – 2005” along with his wife, former BSU Provost Dr. Esther Ward Simmons who preceded him in death. Dr. Simmons was 100 years old. The spry couple became a fixture of Thurgood Marshall Library surrounded by archival records of Bowie State’s storied history. They were known by many members of the campus community who often encountered them on their cheerful strolls to enjoy lunch in the campus dining hall.
It was my honor to have known Dr. Simmons, and Bowie State will be forever indebted for his efforts to document the historical record of this great university. His obituary can be viewed on the website of Watson Funeral Services and Crematory.
Please join me in extending warmest condolences to the Simmons family.
