Passing of Former President Rufus L. Barfield
I am deeply saddened to inform you that former Bowie State president, Dr. Rufus L. Barfield, has passed away. He served as president from 1978-1982 of what was then known as Bowie State College.
Dr. Barfield’s term as president marked a time when the curriculum was greatly expanded to meet changing workforce needs. Under his leadership, Bowie State added academic programs in nursing, public administration and computer science, and the social work program gained accreditation by the National Council of Social Work.
Dr. Barfield was known to encourage participation from faculty and students in activities of the city and the county. He was an active member on the Board of Directors for the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce.
Before becoming Bowie State president, he had been a soldier, teacher, principal, administrator, lecturer, writer and consultant. Dr. Barfield held a doctorate in educational administration from the Miami University of Ohio.
The university community has expressed condolences to the Barfield family. We will notify you of the arrangements when they have been set.
