WHO:

Sixty years after nine African American teenagers became the first to integrate a Little Rock, Arkansas, high school, one of those courageous students, Ernest Green, will discuss the impact of their actions in an address, recognizing the anniversary of that crisis. In 1957, Green and the other members of the Little Rock Nine were the first African American students to attend the Little Rock Central High School – three years after the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education ruling to desegregate public schools.

Green became the first African-American to graduate from that high school in 1958 – civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. attended his graduation. Later, President Bill Clinton honored Green and the other Little Rock Nine members with the Congressional Gold Medal.

WHAT:

Speaking to future educators and school leaders, Ernest Green will engage Bowie State University students in an address focused on the legacy of the school desegregation effort in light of contemporary issues in education. The Bowie State University College of Education is sponsoring this Black History Month event.
