(BOWIE, Md.) — Four undergraduate students with extensive computer coding experience will represent Bowie State University in a national contest to develop mobile apps, facing teams of top students from 14 other historically black colleges and universities that were selected for the 3rd annual Black Enterprise magazine’s BE Smart Hackathon in California next month.

The hackathon, taking place Oct. 9-10 in Burlingame, California, near Silicon Valley, is part of the publication’s annual BETechConnext Summit, which features prominent leaders and experts in the technology industry and attracts hundreds of participants. The top three teams, judged by a panel of experts, will win prizes and bragging rights.

The Bowie State team members are: junior computer science major Nathan Nti, senior computer science major Chevon Nwosu, senior computer science major Chadd Philp, and junior computer science major Harrison Razanajatovo. Each student has competed in at least one hacking competition and is a member of the Bowie State Cyber Squad, led by Professor Lethia Jackson, for students interested in developing their skills in cybersecurity.

The students will not only have the chance to attend skill-building workshops during the tech conference, but they will represent the university on a national stage to demonstrate the strengths of the cybersecurity programs, which are national recognized by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
