(BOWIE, Md.) – Two Bowie State University graduate students are set to present a workshop on what clinicians should know about how social media impacts mental health, as part of this week’s International Conference & Expo on Clinical Psychology in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

At the conference taking place Oct. 18-20, Diamond Bracey, a master’s degree student in mental health counseling, and Kyndall Peele, a master’s degree student in counseling psychology, will address the current and future implications that using social media may have on mental health challenges. The students were selected to present their workshop to spur dialogue with other students and professionals in research and practice from around the globe. The BSU Division of Student Affairs and the Graduate Student Association sponsored the student’s travel expenses.

The International Conference & Expo on Clinical Psychology provides an international platform for discussion of present and future challenges in the profession, clinical trials, recent innovations in psychology and psychiatry, and continuing education. World-leading health practitioners, clinicians, educators and researchers will present cutting-edge and practical clinical techniques and will introduce new and emerging research.

Can using social media extenuate known mental health disorders? Or will the use of social media eventually spawn new mental health challenges? Their workshop answers these question and more for psychologist and psychotherapists. Their goal is to dispel myths surrounding psychiatric disorders perpetuated by social media and to encourage further research about how using social media affects psychiatric disorders.

Both students are outstanding scholars with extensive research experience. Bracey's research interests focus on the attitudes regarding e-counseling in the African American community. Her other papers and presentations include African psychology, person-centered psychology, eating disorders and women of color, among other topics. Peele's current research focuses on presenting Adlerian techniques that can be used with Millennials, aspects of multicultural counseling that aide in the decreasing symptoms of PTSD and anxiety with war refugees, and trauma/stress experienced by first-year minority college students.
