Bowie State Founders Day Honors Past & Focuses on Future in Education

Recent BSU Graduate Dawaine Cosey ('16) to Deliver Inspirational Address

(BOWIE, Md.) – Reflecting on Bowie State University’s origin as a school for formerly enslaved African Americans, the Founders Day convocation focuses on the future in education by highlighting student achievements and an inspirational address by a recent BSU graduate, who is an emerging leader in education. The 154th annual ceremony takes place Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at 10 a.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. Communication Arts Center, Myers Auditorium. Watch it live.

Keynote speaker, Dawaine M. Cosey (’16), serves as director of culture, empowerment and restorative justice at the all-boys Ron Brown College Preparatory High School in Washington, DC, a public school that aims to develop young men’s character, academic curiosity and service. Cosey is also a member of the school’s Culture and Restorative Efforts Team. He tirelessly and passionately provides support to the Young Kings for their socio-emotional development, personal growth, relationship building and sustained holistic health.

He has also volunteered as coordinator of curriculum and culture for Bowie State’s Ignite, a male leadership and development initiative. In that role, he designed and facilitated weekly leadership training and empowerment sessions, as well as service activities, retreats and other programming to build brotherhood and foster positive emotional health, self-awareness and community investment.

The convocation will also feature top students for their scholarship, leadership, campus involvement and athletic achievements, illustrating the powerful impact of a Bowie State education.
