(BOWIE, Md.) – A Bowie State University computer science graduate, who could only dream of using a computer as a child, will be honored as the 2019 Distinguished Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Black Engineers in March.
A micro-architecture engineer at the multinational tech company, Intel Corporation, Dr. Felix Njeh ('95, '14) is responsible for inventing, designing, building and delivering innovative IT solutions, including robots, gadgets and autonomous vehicles. He is a recognized Google scholar, whose extensive research covers cloud computing, big data, networks, and information technology. He will receive the award during the organization's national convention in Detroit, Michigan, from March 27-31.
Although he always performed well in school, Dr. Njeh had never used a computer before starting his undergraduate program in computer science. He earned a master’s degree in computer science at Bowie State and later became one of the first students to enroll in BSU’s Doctor of Science in computer science program. After graduating with his doctoral degree, he launched a successful career in the tech industry and in academia.
“Bowie State University became a nurturing environment, providing me the resources to build the skills needed to excel,” he said. “I appreciate the support from teachers, mentors, classmates and administrators.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Njeh has nurtured his passion for education and technology, previously working in technical roles for the U.S. government and teaching college-level computer science courses, including at Bowie State University.
“As a boy growing up in Cameroon, West Africa, my siblings and I would build our own toys as our parents could not afford them,” said Dr. Njeh. “I often dreamed of and was fascinated about how things worked. These traits steered me to a career in STEM.”
