(BOWIE, Md.) – After leading his boys basketball team to two back-to-back championship victories in as many weeks, a Bowie State University graduate and high school basketball coach was named the 2018-19 All-Metro Boys Coach of the Year by the Baltimore Sun.

Nick Myles challenged his team at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore with the area’s toughest schedule and led the Panthers to a 38-6 regular season record, winning more games than any other local school. The team went on to sweep the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)'s A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League (BCL) championships.

Under Myles, the Panthers have won five league championships, but this season was the first time he led the team to two titles. St. Frances is the nation’s oldest continuously operating, predominantly African-American Catholic high school and educational institution.

“Coaching is truly my passion and I enjoy working with our student athletes on a daily basis,” said Myles, who is grateful for being honored by the Baltimore Sun.

Myles, who majored in history and government, is also grateful for his Bowie State experience and the support of his fellow classmates and professors, including Professor of History M. Sammye Miller. In addition to coaching boys basketball, Myles is also the school’s athletic director and teaches American history.

“My experience as a student at Bowie State made me the man I am today,” he said. “It taught how to work for something that I really wanted, [like] when I walked on the basketball team in 1997-98. I learned how to become an effective leader and the true meaning of brotherhood. My tenure as a student at BSU is filled with great memories and lifelong friends.”
