Bowie State Hosts MD STEM Festival’s First-Ever STEM Parade

Science & Technology Take Center Stage at STEM Parade at BSU

(BOWIE, Md.) – Tackle a math-based obstacle course, build your own mobile app or take a virtual tour of 3D classroom – you can do that and more at the Maryland STEM Festival’s first-ever STEM Parade, as well as hands-on activities involving science and technology, on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Bowie State University.

Hundreds of local children and families are expected to participate in the event, which is designed to inspire interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The STEM Parade will kick off the day, with an Air Force helicopter flyover, marching bands and walkers representing organizations that promote STEM innovation and education, like the U.S. Department of Energy and Mathnasium, a customized math tutoring program. NBC4 meteorologist Amelia Draper and Maryland Delegate Andrea Harrison will act as Grand Marshals.

After the parade, there will be dozens of activities facilitated by Bowie State faculty and students, as well as community partners like the U.S. Coast Guard and iFLY indoor skydiving experience provider. Some of the activities include:

• Math Face Painting
• Math Craft Workshop
• Math Ninja Warrior
• Virtual Reality & Gaming
• U.S. Coast Guard Boat on Display

The Maryland STEM Festival is a month-long celebration bringing hundreds of events focused on fun, interactive science learning opportunities to communities statewide every fall. The festival cultivates a positive environment that inspires children to pursue science- and technology-related careers and encourages businesses to invest in Maryland.
