(BOWIE, Md.) – Hundreds of people are expected to support Bowie State University students and honor community leaders, including former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker III, at the BSU Foundation’s annual Founders Day Scholarship Gala on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt. Purchase your tickets.

Each year, the BSU Foundation’s signature black-tie fundraiser celebrates the founding of Bowie State University and honors community leaders and university supporters, with dinner, dancing and live entertainment. This year, singer/songwriter Stephan Marcellus, former NBC’s “The Voice” contestant and a 2012 BSU graduate, will perform with the BSU Community Jazz Ensemble. The evening’s host is WPGC 95.5 FM’s Guy Lambert, a radio veteran and one of the most recognized voices in Washington, DC radio.

General admissions tickets are $150 each, with proceeds supporting BSU scholarships.

Tune in to WPGC’s Community Focus with Guy Lambert on Sunday, April 6, starting at 6 a.m., to hear an interview previewing the gala and highlighting Bowie State’s recent achievements.

Former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker III will also be recognized for his leadership and service, along with community leaders Glenn and Debra Mahone.

As county executive from 2010-2018, Baker established the Economic Development Incentive Fund, an unprecedented $50 million fund designed to stimulate business growth in the county. Under his leadership, Prince George’s County was consistently a leader in Maryland and the region in job creation, which led to a significant increase in household income and home values. Baker now teaches a politics seminar for BSU Honors Program students, providing them with lessons from his 20+ years in Maryland politics.

The Mahones are tireless supporters of education, with Glenn Mahone having served as the immediate past chairman of the BSU Foundation Board and Debra Mahone leading the Mahone Education Empower Fund, a nonprofit designed to promote equity and resources to high-poverty schools.

The Founders Day Scholarship Gala is one of the most significant ways that the Bowie State community can celebrate the past, while paving the way for future generations of students.
