(BOWIE, Md.) – The African American community’s historical and cultural connection to the African Diaspora is the focus of Bowie State University’s Black History Month celebration.

On Wednesday at 10 a.m., the Black History Month activities officially begin with the annual Spring Convocation in the Martin Luther King Jr. Communication Arts Center, Myers Auditorium. Keynote speaker Dr. Robert Trent Vinson from the College of William and Mary will discuss the impact of the 400 years of black migrations. The artwork for this year’s program book was designed by Mia Joseph, a visual communication and digital media arts major.

Throughout the month, the Bowie State community will celebrate the breadth of the African American experience with events, ranging from an Entrepreneurship Academy pop-up shop to a documentary screening on the legacy of Anita Hill, sponsored by the Wellness Center. An annual Read-a-Thon hosted by the Department of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies, invites the entire campus community to participate in reading aloud from significant cultural texts.
