(BOWIE, Md.) – Four Bowie State University students aiming for a $75,000 grand prize in the nation’s premier academic quiz bowl for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) competed against 47 other teams this week in California.
The BSU students participated in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) from April 13-16 in Torrance, California, near Los Angeles. During the round-robin game play, Bowie State had nabbed the lead of all six schools in their division, before finishing third in the division. The top two teams in eight divisions advance to the Sweet 16 single-elimination playoff.
The team was led by first-year coach Carroll Reed III (’17), a former HCASC BSU team member and team captain. The student team members were:
- Beatrice Amoateng (team captain), sophomore government major
- Leo Genota, senior computer science major
- Isaiah Gregory, junior computer science major
- Steeven Tabuada, sophomore bioinformatics major
The HCASC annually brings together the nation's best and brightest HBCU students in 48 teams to compete in a fast-paced game played in a modified round robin format. The program highlights students’ ability to answer questions about history, science, literature, religion, the arts and pop culture. The final two teams that emerge from the playoffs compete for the grand prize of $75,000 for their school, while teams eliminated in earlier rounds receive smaller grants.
Bowie State has found success in recent years in the tournament. The 2017 team, led by Reed, finished the tournament as the runner-up and took home a $30,000 prize for Bowie State. Before that, BSU had advanced to the Sweet 16 round for three straight years.
