(BOWIE, Md.) – Rushern L. Baker III, who recently ended an eight-year term as Prince George’s County Executive, has taken on a new role at Bowie State University as a visiting professor, teaching an honors political leadership seminar. The seminar, “From Politics to Prose: Lessons in Political Leadership,” engages students about what makes good leaders, the challenges they face, and Baker’s insight into the practical aspects of governing from his 20+ years in Maryland politics.

“Teaching a course on political leadership at BSU has been one of the most satisfying professional experiences of my life,” said Baker. “I have never before seen a group of students more thoughtful and engaged as the ones enrolled in my seminar. Every class I teach reaffirms my commitment to public service, because I know the fight I’ve been fighting for the last three decades for quality education and equal opportunities for all has been the right one.”

Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux has heralded Baker’s affiliation with the university. “Former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker III was among the first to welcome me and offer his support for the new vision for BSU.

“We are honored with his continued support, but in a new way, as he is now helping to achieve the BSU Racing to Excellence vision as a member of the faculty at BSU, giving instruction and guidance to our students.”

Under Baker’s leadership, Maryland’s second-largest county was consistently a leader in the state and the region in job creation, which led to a significant increase in household income and home values. He has always been a strong supporter of education. During his administration, he significantly increased funding for public schools, increased enrollment and expanded academic programs, as well as access to early childhood education programs.

“My collaboration with Bowie State University has been more rewarding than I ever could have imagined,” said Baker. “Bowie State University is a true gem, producing a caliber of students that rival that of any other institution in the State. I am energized even more to ensuring that Bowie State University and every other historically black institution in the State get both the resources and the recognition they deserve for the important contributions they make to our State and our world.”
