(BOWIE, Md.) – A nationally recognized leader in nursing education has been appointed to head Bowie State University’s Department of Nursing, after a national search.
Dr. Jacqueline Hill brings more than 25 years of higher education experience to the position, having served as interim dean, associate dean, chairperson for the undergraduate nursing program and a tenured faculty member at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her leadership and contributions to the nursing profession were recognized with a 2017 gubernatorial appointment to the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and a 2015 induction into the Louisiana Nurses Foundation’s Hall of Fame. Dr. Hill is also past president of the Louisiana State Nurses Association and a former member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the American Nurses Association’s member newspaper.
Dr. Hill is a published scholar and contributor to publications on the nursing profession, with a research focus on mentoring African-Americans in nurse education leadership.
“Dr. Jacqueline Hill is a proven leader in nursing education, particularly in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs),” said Dr. Tanya Brice, dean of Bowie State’s College of Professional Studies. “Most importantly, she has excellent experience in developing strategies that increase the passing rates for HBCU graduates taking the NCLEX-RN licensure examination. We are very excited to have such an accomplished leader and educator of Dr. Hill’s caliber as the chairperson of Bowie State’s Nursing of Department.”
Before becoming a higher education administrator, Dr. Hill taught undergraduate and graduate students in Southern University’s nursing program. She has also taught at Our Lady of the Lake College and Louisiana State University, both in Baton Rouge. She started her career as a clinical nurse in hospitals and home health settings.
“I consider it an honor to be named the nursing chairperson at this prestigious HBCU,” she said. “I am excited to be afforded the opportunity to utilize my expertise and years of experience as a nurse educator and administrator in assisting Bowie State in propelling its nursing program to increased prominence and excellence. I am looking forward to galvanizing the faculty, staff and students to work toward improving the NCLEX-RN licensure scores and the acquisition of resources that will help in the success of the department.”
Dr. Hill holds a doctorate in educational leadership, research and counseling from Louisiana State University. She earned a Master of Science in nursing degree, focused in family health nursing and education, and a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree, both from Southern University. She also holds a master’s certificate in health policy and media engagement from George Washington University.
