(BOWIE, Md.) – Two Bowie State University undergraduate students, who were among six BSU scholars competing in a global business competition, captured first place, while the other four landed in the finals.

Starting Nov. 6, the six College of Business students competed in a five-day, virtual International Business Agility Labs: Accounting competition, hosted by the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business Center for Global Business. Among the six BSU students, they participated in three diverse teams with students from the University of Maryland and Ashesi University in Ghana, Africa, along with the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, both in China. The competition included 10 total teams.

The teams analyzed an accounting case study provided by Sleek, a Singapore-based company that offers online corporate services for entrepreneurs. The teams had to address several  challenges facing international corporations today, including how technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, can fully automate accounting processes.

The six business administration majors are:

  • Adesola Adesoye, marketing concentration
  • Dajah Chambers, accounting concentration
  • Unique Griffins, accounting concentration
  • Brianna Hooks, accounting concentration
  • Staie Raphael, banking & finance concentration
  • Deja Vohendricks, management concentration

In the end, all of the BSU students advanced to the finals, and Chambers and Hooks were on the winning team. All of the BSU students have extensive business case and innovation experience in their classes and the BSU Entrepreneurship Academy, said their coach Jainaba Ceesay, a College of Business lecturer, who teaches entrepreneurship courses and has led several BSU student teams in business competitions.

“I’m extremely proud. This is one of the most exciting things ever. I haven’t seen this much excitement in our students,” said Ceesay. “All of the students have demonstrated or have the potential if given the opportunity to excel, and that’s exactly what they did.”
