(BOWIE, Md.) – A veteran civil servant and Bowie State University lecturer in the College of Business was selected for induction as a prestigious National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) Fellow, recognizing his distinguished leadership and expertise in public service.

Calvin Johnson is one of 45 members of the 2020 Class of Academy Fellows, who will be officially honored at NAPA’s annual Academy Fall Meeting, taking place virtually Nov. 5-10. The NAPA Fellows is an exclusive group of more than 940 public service practitioners from around the nation. The Fellows are public managers and scholars, business executives and labor leaders, current and former cabinet officers, members of Congress, governors, mayors, state legislators and diplomats.

Johnson serves in the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) as the deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Research, Evaluation & Monitoring. He is also a lecturer in Bowie State’s nationally accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program, which is among the nation’s top MPA programs.

“I’m honored. The Fellows are some of the nation’s thought leaders, who really understand public governance and how to bring to bear some of the most innovative approaches to creating diverse, inclusive and equitable strategies in government,” he said. He is most looking forward to working with other Fellows to “help governments solve some of the most challenging problems that they are having."

As a group, the Fellows represent NAPA’s primary vehicle for addressing current and emerging issues and contributing to the intellectual and popular discourse on government. Selection of new Fellows follows a rigorous review of the individual’s contributions to the field of public administration and policy.

Johnson has a broad range of experience in public service. At HUD, he leads a team of more than 30 professionals and a broad range of stakeholders to conduct and manage evaluations, demonstrations and research focusing on the needs of the nation’s under-resourced communities. He also has worked in various roles in local governments, including the administration of former Washington, DC Mayor Anthony Williams.

“I am very pleased to welcome Calvin Johnson to the Academy’s 2020 class of Fellows,” said Terry Gerton, President and CEO of the Academy. “Our distinguished Fellows are nationally recognized for their expertise and contributions to the field of public administration and Calvin is no exception. During this especially turbulent time for government, we welcome his experience and perspective as we work collaboratively to find solutions to the Grand Challenges in Public Administration, advance social equity and build resilient communities.”
