(BOWIE, Md.) – The latest film of Melvin Jackson Jr. (’05), “I’m a Survivor No Longer A Victim,” is being considered for a 2022 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary as well as for Outstanding Director. The film delivers a powerful message about domestic violence survivors and focuses on women, men, and the LBGTQ community.

Data on domestic violence in the United States is alarming. There are more than 10 million adults in the United States who experience domestic violence yearly.  One in four women and one in 10 men experience sexual or physical abuse and stalking by an intimate partner.

“My inspiration for writing and producing the documentary originates from hearing domestic violence stories while attending an event in Los Angeles,” said Jackson. “I felt compelled to bring real-life stories to the screen to bring awareness, help people get out of domestic violence situations, and for survivors to truly heal. I think awareness is particularly important since this is Women’s History Month,” he said.

Domestic violence is pervasive in every community and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. It can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death. Black women experience domestic violence at even more alarming rates than women from other ethnic groups.  Statistics show that over 40 percent of black women will experience some form of domestic violence throughout their lifetime and are 2.5 times more likely to be murdered by men.

“Producing the documentary gave me a chance to amplify the voices of untold survivors,” said Jackson. “It also allowed family members and friends of domestic violence victims to express their feelings and concerns about a problem that can impact young and old.”

The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime.  Children who witness domestic violence in the home often believe that they are to blame, live in a constant state of fear, and are 15 times more likely to be victims of child abuse.

“I’m A Survivor No Longer A Victim” is airing now on ALLBLK.

Melvin Jackson Jr. is a 2005 graduate of Bowie State University and is recognized for roles that include: portraying legendary rapper Kurtis Blow in BET’s “New Edition Story”; Eddie Murphy in REELZ Docu-drama “The Price of Fame”; Bernard on HBO’s “The Wire” and The Bully on CW’s “Everybody Hates Chris.”  Jackson received his first Emmy nomination for his performance in the YouTube series, “This Eddie Murphy Role is Mine, Not Yours.”
