(BOWIE, Md.) – After last year’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s and women’s basketball tournament was scratched due to COVID-19, there is pent-up demand for the classic winter HBCU sporting event that will be held in Baltimore from Tuesday, February 22, through Sunday, February 27.  Bowie State University is serving as the tournament’s host school with students, alumni, faculty, and administrators eager to welcome fans from across the nation to the games and numerous other activities.

“The CIAA basketball tournament is much more than playing basketball games to crown men’s and women’s league champions,” said Clyde Doughty, vice president of intercollegiate athletics & recreation at BSU.  “Fans and supporters travel from across the nation to not only watch games and cheer their favorite teams, but to attend career expos, wellness seminars, step shows, and numerous other activities.  Most importantly, everyone must remember that to attend any events in-person at the tournament, masks will be required in adherence with current COVID Protocols,” said Doughty.

Bowie State has a huge alumni base in the Maryland, D.C., and Virginia region.  Many of the other CIAA member schools also have a significant number of alumni living and working in the Mid-Atlantic corridor and up the East Coast to Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.

“We have a long and storied connection to Baltimore since the university was founded there in 1865 before it was moved to Prince George’s County in 1911,” said Doughty.  “BSU still has strong ties to the city with Darryl Brooks, an assistant men’s basketball coach, and Sade Swann, an assistant women’s basketball coach, both Baltimore natives.”

CIAA schools are Bowie State, Claflin, Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith, Lincoln, Saint Augustine’s, Shaw, Virginia State, Virginia Union, Winston-Salem State universities and Livingstone College.
