(BOWIE, Md.) – Professor. Barbara Smith began her career in the Bowie State University College of Education in 1972 and was recognized for 50 years of service during the 2022 Employee Recognition Program. The annual program recognized 47 faculty and staff for years of service in five-year increments and Presidential Awards for achievement and service.
When Professor Smith started teaching at Bowie State, the university didn’t resemble how it looks today.
“I’ve been fortunate to witness this university grow as a campus and as a major contributor to the education and culture of the residents of Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland,” said Professor Smith. “I’m honored to have been blessed to touch the lives of thousands of students and faculty members at BSU for over half a century. Someone asked me why have I stayed so long at the university, and I told them it’s simple. My passion has been and always will be teaching at Bowie State.”
Eleven individuals received the prestigious Presidential Achievement Awards based on the four areas of Research and Grants, Teaching, Performance and Service.
