(BOWIE, Md.) – Promoting excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse workforce to advance the health of the nation and the global community was the theme of the message that Beverly Malone PhD., president and CEO of the National League for Nursing (NLN), shared with Bowie State’s nursing department at a retreat last week.

The cornerstone of Bowie State’s nursing department is built upon the mission to provide high quality academic programs for students with courses designed to prepare students who demonstrate excellence in evidence-based practice, exhibit leadership skills and are dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in nursing, and excellence.

“Nursing education is a specialty area and should definitely be evidence-based,” said Dr. Malone. “I believe nursing education and nurse educators should be in the spotlight so that their contributions to healthcare can be appreciated. Public health is critically important to all of us who are nurse educators and promoting health and healing now takes on an even greater importance due to COVID.”

The NLN’s core values of caring, integrity, diversity and inclusion and excellence align very closely with the vision of BSU’s nursing department. Caring is as fundamental as the nursing profession and encompasses promoting health, healing and hope.  Integrity means giving every person the respect and dignity they deserve, while diversity and inclusion affirms the uniqueness and differences among persons, ideas, values and ethnicities.

“We’re committed to providing all students with the highest quality nursing education experience possible,” said Dr. Jacqueline Hill, chair of BSU’s nursing department. “Dr. Malone emphasized that a nursing education program has to have caring students and faculty members. BSU’s nursing program is grounded in caring for our students which will translate into them caring for their patients when they become nurses.”

Dr. Malone also noted the importance of BSU’s nursing and computer science departments collaborating on the public health informatics technology (PHIT) initiative. “It’s about where public health is going,” she said. “The future of health care depends on PHIT and the workforce will have to embrace it going forward. It’s where the nation and world has to go. BSU’s work on PHIT will position the school as a model for other HBCUs and all institutions of higher learning.”
