(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State University student journalist Dejah Miles is one of six student fellows selected for the latest cohort of the journalism fellowship program Open Campus HBCU Student Journalism Network. The fellows will cover their campuses for regional and national audiences with opportunities to have their stories published by major news outlets such as The New York Times and The Washington Post and will participate in professional training and networking.
It is the second cohort of the paid reporting fellowship, which Open Campus created in 2022 in partnership with veteran HBCU journalist Jarrett Carter, Sr. The fellowship is open to HBCU students with some journalism experience. Fellows from North Carolina A&T State University, Howard University, Alabama State University and Norfolk State University round out the cohort.
“I’m looking to make a lot of connections with other fellows,” said Miles, as senior communications student with a focus on print journalism. “I’m also looking to get connected to other journalists and senior editors that work for the bigger papers. Overall, I just want to strengthen my writing skills.”
In addition to the fellowship, Miles has previous internship experience writing for The Bowie Sun and Mother Jones. Miles credits the combination of her communications course work and her professor. Dr. Karima Haynes, facilitating the connections that prepared her for those internships and the fellowship program.
“The classes I had to take strengthened my writing,” said Miles. “I got a lot of pieces out because they have us writing often, so I learned a lot of different styles of writing.”
Miles’ interest in journalism was sparked while she was in high school after an English teacher at Great Mills High School suggested she take up AP English and join the school newspaper. Miles mostly writes about current events but hopes to focus on juvenile crime, finance, or international news topics. She could also see herself getting involved in filmmaking down the line.
“I hope to write for Bloomberg News one day,” said Miles. “If not, I hope to get into script writing and making my own documentaries.”
