(BOWIE, Md.) – Grab your helmets and cleats sports fans, as the football season is upon us, and the Bowie State Bulldogs are eyeing this season to return to conference contention.

The Bulldogs had to work through sudden shifts in the coaching staff when former defensive coordinator Kyle Jackson was elevated to interim head coach and finished 6-4 last season before stepping into the full-time head coach’s role. Jackson follows former coach Damon Wilson, who left to take over Morgan State University’s football program after 13 seasons at Bowie State.

Senior wide receiver Keshane Hinckley, a sport management graduate who is now pursuing his master’s in organizational communications, is itching to get back into action. The Bulldogs prepare to open the season against the Delaware State Hornets on Sept. 2 in Dover, DE. Hinckley describes himself as an all-purpose receiver who’s confident in his ability to break big plays if the ball sails anywhere in his vicinity, and he looks forward to every opportunity to find holes in the defense during the season.

“I’m an open field guy,” said Hinckley, who led the Bulldogs in receptions (56), yards (686) and receiving touchdowns (5) last season. “You give me the ball in an open space, and I’m going to make something happen. I’m a consistent catch guy.”

Beyond his impact in the offense, Coach Jackson expects Hinckley to be a key leader for the team. His leadership style tends to lean more toward action over words, but those actions are still capable of delivering a powerful message to his teammates.

“Keshane is a great asset to our program,” said Jackson. “Kehsane leads by example and lets his hard work speak for itself.”

Hinckley said the Bulldogs are returning a lot of talent and expect to be in the hunt for the CIAA crown. In addition to contending for a conference title, Hinckley pointed to another motivation that grips the Bulldogs as they await the season opener, the opportunity to strike against different jerseys after spending all summer beating up on each other.

“We’re tired of hitting each other right now,” said Hinckley. “Us going out against Delaware State is a spark.”

The Hornets defeated Bulldogs 32-24 the last time two squads met each other on the field. Beyond the thrill of starting the year off with a win, Hinckley and the team are hoping to bring home a measure of revenge when they come back from Dover.
