(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State redshirt freshman quarterback Jordan Morse believes in always staying prepared, and that lesson was crystalized for him when he took over as the Bulldogs’ signal caller during the final three games of the year.

“After the Virginia Union game, one of our quarterbacks got hurt,” said Morse. “There was nowhere to turn to, so they decided to throw me out there. I knew that I would be able to start the last couple of games.”

Morse took his opportunity and maximized it, as he threw for six touchdowns and ran for four more scores that allowed Bowie State to end their season on a three-game winning streak. Morse had his best outing during Bowie State’s last game against Lincoln (Pa.) University, where he completed 19-of-28 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 66 yards and two touchdowns, all career-highs. Morse was named HBCU National Player of the Week after the 46-39 win over Lincoln and also made the CIAA All-Rookie Team.

“The whole team was very supportive, as well as the coaches,” said Morse. “They gave me complete confidence to go out there, be myself and do what I could do. It’s cool getting recognized for those awards, but I can’t say enough about my teammates. They put me in a good position to be able to make the plays and achieve those awards.”

Morse believes the awards he earned are just the beginning in terms of what he can accomplish on the field. He’s focused on using this offseason to strengthen his body and work on making quicker throws so he doesn’t take as many sacks next season. But for now, Morse is glad he was able to step up when the team needed him to close out the season.

“The mindset has always been stay ready so you don’t have to get ready,” said Morse. “It’s a long season, so you always have to be ready for the moment. It might not be tomorrow. But when it does come, you’ll be able to lead the team to win.”

In addition to Morse, Kaleb Chester, Devin Williams, Justin Zavala, Shawn Lewis, Hasan Mosley, Jadon Carter and Malcolm Sesay made all-conference teams for the Bulldogs. Chester and Williams were named to the All-CIAA First Team, while Zavala, Lewis, Mosley and Carter made the All-CIAA Second Team. Sesay joined Morse on the All-Rookie Team.
