(BOWIE, Md.) – Jaivien Kendricks experienced what few creatives get to do when he presented his clothing line to the world during NY Fashion Week in September. Kendricks, a junior business administration major with a concentration in marketing, participated in the Harlem Fashion Row event where he set up a display that featured multiple balaclavas, or ski masks, sewn into a hoodie.

Kendricks participated in the fashion event as a result of being named an AT&T rising future maker. But he also credited Bowie State University with ingraining in him a sense of patience that has allowed the rising fashion designer to enjoy the process instead of rushing forward recklessly.

“Bowie State has taught me a lot of lessons when it comes to working with people,” said Kendricks. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is good things take time. Bowie State has taught me to take my time and enjoy the journey.”

Kendricks said participating in New York Fashion Week was right up there with getting to show off his designs during last season’s NBA All-Star weekend. He’s always hungry for feedback on his designs, and Kendricks enjoys exchanging ideas and networking with industry professionals as he works to move his More Life brand forward.

“Being with other creators who tell me, ‘Your work is tough, it’s dope,’ it feels good to hear,” said Kendricks. “It’s cool to hear other people’s visions, how they want to contribute to the industry and how we can help each other now and down the road.”

Beyond getting to rub elbows with creatives and celebrities like ASAP Rocky and Kelly Rowland, Kendricks sees New York Fashion Week as another step forward in building his clothing empire. He said he’s in talks with Nordstroms and other such shops and also working to get his apparel into Washington, DC stores in the near future. The sky’s the limit in Kendricks’ eyes, and he can’t wait to realize his full potential.

“It’s one step closer to getting where I need to go,” said Kendricks. “It’s all about the exposure and opportunity. It’s motivating me to keep pushing and elevate my brand to where I want it to be. There’s so much opportunity out there, and I’m super excited to take advantage of it.”
