BSU Theatre Hosting Spring Performance of Medea

Production Will Touch on Trauma, Forgiveness

(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State University Theatre is preparing to host its spring production, Medea, next month. Performances are scheduled for April 6-8 at BSU’s Black Box Theatre in the Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Medea is billed as a complex, ancient tale of betrayal and revenge. Medea, the main subject of the play, is guilty of heinous crimes, which the production explores along with contributing factors such as societal permissiveness and forgiveness of men that could drive women to do the unimaginable.

“The tale of Medea is often reduced to a tale of revenge, but it is far more complex than this,” said Elena Velasco, theatre professor and production manager for Bowie State University Theatre. “In the original myth, it is not she, but the king who banishes her and then kills her children. This story is changed in the hands of Euripides, who demonizes the title character as a betrayer of her country and family, and adept in the dark arts. In BSU’s version, we’re looking at the impact of persistent trauma which has been experienced by Medea which triggers the denigration of reasoning and clarity, driving her to do the unthinkable.”

Through a blend of contemporary language, movement and aerial choreography, Medea explores the many layers of the mind and a broken heart.
