New Graduate School Interim Dean Brings Years of Experience

Dr. Guyden Will Provide Input on Enhancing the Graduate School

(BOWIE, Md.) – Dr. Janet A. Guyden joins Bowie State University as the interim Dean of the Graduate School after over 30 years of leadership roles at Florida A & M University, Georgia State University, Grambling State University and other institutions to guide and assess strategies needed to i enhance the graduate school and its programs. 

“One of my goals is to provide leadership in evaluating the graduate school’s programs and processes to ensure the school is more successful.” said Dr. Guyden. “It’s important for me to listen, ask questions and provide feedback on the evaluation as we strive to take the graduate school to the next level, particularly R-2 research status.”   

For nine years, Dr. Guyden served as Associate Vice President for Research and Dean of the College of Professional Studies School of Graduate Studies and Research at Grambling State University.  She also served as the interim Dean of the College of Education at Florida A&M University and Dean for Admissions, Recruitment and Financial Aid at Paine College among other executive leadership positions. 

“What do we want the person to know who will become the permanent Dean of the Graduate School,” said Guyden? “It’s going to be important for me to provide information that will help in making the decision on who leads this organization and its programs.”  

Bowie State University’s graduate programs computer science, education and public administration were ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2023 for their level of excellence. 

Dr. Guydon earned her B.A. degree in English from Howard University, her M.Ed. degree in counselor education from Worchester State University and her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Georgia State University.
