NSF Grant Funds New Research in Department of Natural Sciences

Dr. Konda Karnati to Study Machine Learning Projects to Reduce Drug Costs

(BOWIE, Md.) – A professor from Bowie State University’s Department of Natural Sciences was awarded a sizable grant from the Natural Science Foundation (NSF) for research that could reduce the costs for pharmaceutical research.

Dr. Konda Karnati, a bioinformatics professor, received a grant of $300,000 over three years for projects that will use machine learning methods to facilitate drug discovery. The projects will focus on using artificial intelligence technology to help map molecular bonds for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which represent the largest family of cell membrane proteins that control crucial functions in our bodies. The process for discovering the bonds normally involves costly experiments that can range in the billions of dollars.

“What makes this research truly remarkable is its potential to transform drug screening through artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches,” said Dr. Karnati. “Nearly half of all drugs on the market target GPCRs. However, traditional drug development is both costly and often fraught with disappointment.”

Use of A.I. and machine learning would eliminate the need for costly, time-consuming experiments and reduce the overall expense of drug discovery.

Beyond that, the grant also helps develop the next generation of researchers by providing students with the chance to master the latest research and development techniques that science has to offer.

“This research isn't just about scientific advancement,” said Dr. Karnati. “It's also about nurturing the next generation of scientists and providing our students with hands-on experience in this cutting-edge research.”
