Spring 2023 Dean’s List Students Recognized

Bowie State Celebrates Academic Excellence

(BOWIE, Md.) – Over 300 students were recognized last Saturday afternoon during half time of the Bowie State football game for academic achievements and making the Dean’s List in the Spring 2023 semester. There were 919 students who earned the prestigious honor in the spring. Students have to earn a 3.5 grade point average or better to qualify for the Dean’s List.

“Taking time to acknowledge and celebrate our students’ academic excellence is very important,” said Dr. Guy-Alain Amoussou, acting provost. “We have traditional and non-traditional students who made the Dean’s list. Some students work part-time or full-time jobs. Some have families at home. Regardless, Bowie State believes all students who make the Dean’s List deserve public recognition.”

Earlier in the day the Dean’s List students with their family members and friends were treated to a tailgate party before the game to enable the scholars to get acquainted with each other and share experiences. Various campus administrators and faculty members also attended to congratulate the students.

Aaliyah Miller, a senior political science major from Long Island, New York, has made the Dean’s list three times. Even so, she says it is still special.

“I like to show my academic accomplishments and how successful I’ve been in my major,” said Miller. “My mother began attending the Dean’s list recognition events the first time I qualified over a year ago and hasn’t missed a celebration. Mom attends to show how much she appreciates how well I’m doing at the university, and that means a lot to me.”

The Dean’s list event is held each semester to recognize students with at least a 3.5 GPA, and to serve as a motivating factor for other students to apply themselves so that they too can be on the Dean’s list.

“We believe that many students who are not on the Dean’s list will become inspired and work harder to earn the grades required to qualify after observing their friends and associates being recognized,” said Dr. Amoussou. “It’s about academics. Bowie State encourages all students to excel and pursue academic excellence. That’s what it’s all about.”
