Computer Science Chair Awarded USM’s Elkins Professorship
$30,000 Award to Fund Computer Science Experiential Learning Center

(BOWIE, Md.) – Computer Science Department Chair Rosemary Shumba became the latest Bowie State University faculty member to earn the distinguished Wilson H. Elkins Academic Transformation Professorship.
The Elkins Professorship is awarded to University System of Maryland (USM) professors who demonstrate a solid record of achievement in a recognized academic or professional discipline and a demonstrated ability and continuing desire to lead and inspire undergraduate and graduate students in a range of learning situations.
“I was super excited,” said Dr. Shumba after learning she was awarded this year’s Elkins Professorship.
Dr. Shumba will receive $30,000 from the professorship to fund her proposal for creating an experiential learning center for Bowie State. The goal of the center is to give students access to further skills development and professional development opportunities to prepare them for jobs in the competitive tech industry.
“The goal of the center is to make sure our students are career ready for those tech jobs,” said Dr. Shumba. “This is my passion; we really want to ensure they’re prepared, and the tech experiential learning center will provide another mechanism to reinforce what they have learned in the classroom.”
Dr. Shumba has become the latest Bowie State professor to earn the Elkins Professorship in recent years. She joins Dr. Karen Cook-Bell (2023, 2022), Dr. Julius Davis (2021, 2020) and Dr. George Ude (2016).
