Meet the New Department of Nursing Chair: Dr. Monique Alston

The Department of Nursing at Bowie State University is beginning a new era of leadership with Dr. Monique Alston, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, who will serve as department chair and an associate professor. A proud graduate of Bowie High School, Dr. Alston brings her journey full circle as she returns to the community that shaped her. With more than 25 years of experience as a registered nurse and over two decades in nursing education, she offers deep expertise and a genuine passion for helping students succeed.

“Dr. Alston is a distinguished academician and an accomplished leader in the field of nursing, bringing with her a wealth of experience in both clinical practice and academic administration,” said Dr. Cheryl Blackman, dean and professor of psychology in the College of Professional Studies. “Her leadership and commitment to excellence position her well to guide the nursing department into its next chapter. I am confident that under her leadership, the department will not only build upon its past achievements but will also expand its impact on nursing education for an even more successful future.”

Dr. Alston’s path has combined clinical practice in women’s and children’s health with academic leadership in classrooms, clinical instruction and online environments. She earned her BSN from the University of Delaware, an MSN in Nursing Education from Marymount University, and a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Nursing Education from Capella University. Her doctoral research explored how web-based simulation can improve critical thinking skills in nursing students, reflecting her belief that technology can transform education and better prepare students for the realities of healthcare.

“It is with great joy that I am joining the Bowie State University family in the Department of Nursing,” said Dr. Alston. “I look forward to supporting students, faculty and staff as I serve the university as department chair. As the institution boldly moves forward, I cannot wait to showcase all the new opportunities within nursing that meet the needs of our local and national nursing community.”

Dr. Alston will oversee the department’s academic strategy and daily operations. Her priorities include advancing curriculum and accreditation, expanding clinical partnerships, mentoring faculty, and supporting student preparation for licensure and beyond. Bowie State’s state-of-the-art simulation facilities already offer immersive, hands-on learning, and Dr. Alston is eager to strengthen those opportunities while exploring innovative approaches that keep Bowie State graduates at the forefront of the nursing profession.

For Dr. Alston, this new role is not only about administration but also about people. She is deeply committed to supporting faculty, staff and students as they work together to meet the needs of the community. By combining her experience with her dedication to student success and her advocacy for technology in education, she is set to lead the department with vision and care.
