(BOWIE, Md.) — Bowie State University came alive with the spirit of sustainability as students, faculty and staff gathered at Peace Park to honor Earth Day with an afternoon of celebration, creativity and climate-conscious action. The festive event featured a high-energy DJ set, free food from local trucks, interactive eco-games and hands-on learning experiences designed to spotlight the importance of environmental stewardship.

The celebration invited the campus community to hit pause on their digital routines and tune in to the natural world. Attendees engaged in everything from recycling challenges and seed-planting stations to immersive exhibits and informational booths showcasing green technologies, sustainable habits and climate action efforts. Through play and purpose, the event empowered students to embrace their role in creating a greener future.

“Earth Day at Bowie State is more than just an event, it’s a reminder that we each have a responsibility to protect the environment for future generations,” said Jabari Walker, BSU’s energy and sustainability coordinator. “We promoted Earth Day through student-led cleanups, awareness tables and social media campaigns. More people, especially young people, need to understand that the climate crisis affects us all, and Earth Day gives us a reason to slow down and take meaningful action.”

The day’s festivities not only amplified Earth Day’s global mission but also reflected Bowie State’s bold commitment to sustainability and student-driven change. From lively music and eco-education to peer-led initiatives and creative expression, the event brought sustainability to life in a way that was celebratory, inspiring and deeply impactful.

As Bowie State continues to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility, Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder: meaningful change begins right here — on campus, in community and with each of us.
