Bowie State Senior Ciyani Smith Earns National ArtTable Fellowship

Student Selected for Prestigious Program Supporting Women Leaders in the Arts

Bowie State Senior Ciyani Smith Earns National ArtTable Fellowship

Bowie State University celebrates senior Ciyani Smith for earning national recognition as one of only 12 students across the country selected for the prestigious 2025 ArtTable Fellowship. Her placement at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Virginia reflects not only her personal talent and ambition, but also the caliber of Bowie State’s Visual Communication and Digital Media Arts program and its commitment to developing culturally engaged leaders in the arts.

Ciyani is a rising senior in the Visual Communication and Digital Media Arts (VCDMA) program, with a concentration in digital media arts and a minor in museum studies and visual culture. She was recently awarded a prestigious 2025 ArtTable Fellowship, one of only 12 students selected nationwide.

This summer, Ciyani is serving as a fellow at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. The ArtTable Fellowship places her at the heart of museum work, offering hands-on experience in curation, public programming and arts administration. Supported by a $4,000 stipend, the program aims to elevate underrepresented voices in the arts and empower the next generation of cultural leaders. Its mission closely aligns with Ciyani’s drive, talent and vision.

“Being selected as a 2025 ArtTable Fellow is a significant milestone in my artistic journey,” Ciyani shared. “As a rising senior at Bowie State University, this fellowship connects with my passion for using art to empower communities and spark cultural dialogue. It’s not only an opportunity for personal growth as an artist but also an avenue for me to explore new professional ambitions in civic engagement, leadership, public programming and corporate partnerships.

“This experience has also introduced me to the intersection of museums with business, economic development, retail and city planning — showing me how the arts, both visual and performing, are crucial in creating diverse, exciting and equitable communities.”

Her selection is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of the transformative learning environment within Bowie State’s VCDMA program. Under the mentorship of dedicated faculty like Department Chair and Program Coordinator Professor Tewodross M. Williams, students like Ciyani are empowered to grow, lead and excel in competitive creative fields.

“Ciyani is one of our brightest rising stars,” said Professor Williams. “Her success is a testament to her dedication and to the strength of our program, which continues to open doors for our students on national and global stages.”

As Ciyani continues this exciting chapter, she carries with her the creativity, excellence and pride of the Bowie State community. Her story is a powerful reminder that when talent meets opportunity — and is nurtured by the right environment — there are no limits to what can be achieved.

Congratulations, Ciyani. You make Bowie State proud.
