Cycling Club Rolls into the Top 10 with Room for More Riders

The newly formed Bowie State University Cycling Club is already making waves, earning a top 10 finish in the Atlantic Conference of USA Cycling during its inaugural season.

Under the leadership of Coach Sir-Colin Franklin, the team has hit the ground pedaling, fostering camaraderie, fitness and school pride. With just two cyclists this year, BSU placed 10th overall, with all points earned by women riders — a proud moment for the university and a promising sign of the program’s bright future.

The club gathers every Thursday in Parking Lot I at 5:30 p.m. for a community team ride, with wheels rolling at 6 p.m. The group begins with a loop around campus before heading out on a 22-mile route through the streets of Bowie. These rides are designed to be inclusive and enjoyable, keeping the team together in a Zone 2 training pace focused on endurance, unity and fun.

“This is not bicycling — it is cycling, which are two very different activities,” said Clyde Doughty Jr., vice president for intercollegiate athletics and recreation. “While the terms are often used interchangeably, cycling as a sport involves strategy, discipline and endurance. The club welcomes all riders, whether new to the sport or seasoned competitors, and offers an opportunity to experience the more structured and competitive side of riding within an encouraging and inclusive environment.”

The BSU Cycling Club is open to all students and supporters, offering a unique opportunity to stay active, build friendships, and proudly represent Bowie State on the road. Learn more about the BSU Cycling Club and join a ride.
