Staff Institute Highlights the Power of We at Bowie State

Bowie State University staff came together on July 17, 2025, for the Summer Staff Institute — a day dedicated to collaboration, professional development and building stronger teams. Under the theme “The Power of We: Building Transformative Teams That Break Barriers,” the event celebrated the vital role staff play in advancing the university’s mission while equipping them with tools to grow, innovate, and lead.

The day opened with remarks from President Aminta H. Breaux, Vice President Manish Kumar, and Staff Council Chair Tanya Jones, who also served as University Council chair last academic year and continues to sit on the Council.

“The Staff Institute is more than an annual tradition — it’s an opportunity to strengthen our skills, connect with colleagues, and recommit to the collective work that moves Bowie State forward” said Jones. “When we invest in our people, we invest in the university’s success.”

Workshops Designed for Growth and Innovation

Participants engaged in interactive sessions covering wellness, emerging technology, productivity, and performance management — all aimed at inspiring personal growth and advancing institutional success. Angela Waller led activities focused on mindfulness and stress reduction to foster well-being and stronger team connections. Chandra Gudena explored how artificial intelligence can be applied responsibly in higher education to drive innovation. Khari Gzifa demonstrated practical tips for getting more out of Microsoft tools, while Mary Ogan showcased how the Performance Management Process can link individual contributions to Bowie State’s broader goals.

Keynote Inspires Collaboration

In the afternoon keynote, “Coach” George Rice III presented The Power of We: Building Transformative Teams That Break Barriers, emphasizing trust, shared purpose, and breaking down silos to achieve institutional success.

Reflecting on the day’s impact, Jones added, “The energy in the room was inspiring — you could feel people making new connections, sharing ideas, and leaving with a renewed sense of purpose. This is exactly the kind of momentum that helps us achieve great things together.”
