Student Spotlight: Angelo Price-Estrada

Senior Honors Scholar Reflects Bowie State’s Spirit of Purpose, Service and Pride

Student Spotlight: Angelo Price-Estrada

Senior Honors Scholar Angelo Price-Estrada is a shining example of how dedication, community and opportunity come together at Bowie State University. As a History and Government major with a concentration in Government and a minor in Pre-Law, he has distinguished himself as a scholar, leader and advocate for service. From representing the university on Capitol Hill to mentoring peers through campus organizations, Price-Estrada’s story reflects Bowie State’s commitment to developing students who lead with integrity and purpose.

Born and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Price-Estrada chose Bowie State not just for its reputation but for its connection to the community that shaped him. Guided by the Booker T. Washington quote, “Cast down your bucket where you are,” he saw BSU as the perfect place to grow where his roots were already strong. In addition to receiving a full scholarship, he was drawn to the university’s access to opportunities closely aligned with his studies. As a History and Government major, he has engaged in public policy and government experiences at the local, state and national levels, opportunities he once thought were beyond reach. Within the Honors Program and the Department of History & Government, he found a supportive and inspiring environment filled with motivated peers and faculty who share his drive to make a difference.

During his time at Bowie State, Price-Estrada has taken on several leadership roles, including serving as the 32nd president of the Honors Student Organization and as president of the Pre-Law Society. Both positions have allowed him to foster collaboration, structure and professionalism among his peers, even introducing Robert’s Rules of Order to guide meetings. He credits much of his success to the guidance of mentors such as Dr. Monika Gross and Mr. Nkem Onianwah in the Honors Program and to the faculty in the Department of History & Government, including Dr. Weldon Jackson, Dr. Carmen Walker, Hon. Judge Herman Dawson, Dr. Diarra Robertson, Dr. Benjamin Arah, Dr. Frederick Mills, Dr. Karen Cook-Bell, Ms. Margo Buck-Hurley and Dr. David Reed. Their encouragement, he said, has helped shape his growth as a scholar and leader.

Price-Estrada’s accomplishments are as impressive as they are meaningful. He joined Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux at a Capitol Hill HBCU roundtable with congressional members during the 2024-2025 academic year, an experience that deepened his commitment to higher education and public policy. He also interned with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division during his undergraduate studies, where he mediated disputes between consumers and businesses and worked to improve public service practices. On campus, he collaborated with faculty and administrators during his senior year to help the university adopt the International Baccalaureate Credit Curriculum, expanding BSU’s ability to attract students with diverse academic backgrounds. His dedication to scholarship earned him recognition as the College of Arts & Sciences History and Government Department Scholar for 2024-2025 and induction into Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society and Alpha Chi National College Honor Society.

His commitment to civic engagement is deeply personal. Growing up in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia area gave him early exposure to political and governmental events and inspired his academic pursuits. He recalls meeting former U.S. Congressman and now Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown at a local community event, an experience that underscored the importance of civic participation and community-based solutions. Raised in a faith-centered household, Price-Estrada credits his family and church for instilling in him the value of service. “My faith has taught me to contribute to society and help create a more harmonious world,” he said. “Public service and civic engagement allow me to live those values every day.”

That spirit of service extends beyond campus. Price-Estrada serves on the board of directors for the Prince George’s County League of Women Voters, where he helps educate the public about civic participation and the power of voting. He has moderated local candidate forums, including those for the 7th Judicial Circuit Court and the Prince George’s County Council, and frequently speaks to college students about voting rights and the importance of engagement in the democratic process. Through his work with Bowie State’s Pre-Law Society, he mentors peers preparing for law school and the LSAT, helping to build the next generation of legal and civic leaders.

As he prepares to graduate, Price-Estrada is setting his sights on law school and a career in public interest law, where he hopes to continue serving the community that has supported him. His dream is to work within the public sector, shaping policies that promote equity and justice.

“I want to use my education to make a difference,” he said. “Bowie State has given me the tools, the confidence and the community to do exactly that.”
