The graduating class included 696 undergraduate students, 160 master’s degree recipients and 31 doctoral graduates, reflecting the university’s continued growth and commitment to academic excellence, access and student success.
Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, president of Bowie State, praised graduates for their perseverance and emphasized the university’s role in preparing ethical leaders.
“The Class of 2026 represents a powerful reflection of excellence and determination,” said Dr. Breaux. “Their accomplishments speak to the strength of Bowie State’s academic programs and our commitment to developing graduates who lead, innovate and serve in a global society.”
Renowned scholar, author and social commentator Dr. Michael Eric Dyson delivered the keynote address, encouraging graduates to pursue excellence and lead with purpose in a complex and evolving world.
“If your mind isn't already there, your body isn't going to be there when you arrive,” said Dr. Dyson. “You got to imagine where you're heading. You have got to imagine a different future. You have got to already be where you're aiming to be. Aim high. You will be presidents and doctors and physicians and lawyers and ditch diggers and entrepreneurs. Already be there in your mind."
Dr. Dyson also encouraged graduates to make their voice heard through civic engagement.
“Let them know who you're committed to because we believe in a democracy that is fueled by the energy of the people...free your mind and make it to the polls and make a difference. Be a bulldog, BSU!"
Among the graduates recognized during the ceremony were students whose accomplishments exemplify leadership, scholarship and service:
- Second Lt. Luciano Saavedra, a communications major and cadet battalion commander, will serve as a Signal Corps officer in the U.S. Army after mentoring nearly 90 cadets across the Bulldog Battalion.
- Deborah Lee, who earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, plans to pursue a career in higher education and policy.
- Lindsey George, a computer science major and standout student-athlete, earned multiple conference and national honors, further solidifying her legacy in Bowie State athletics.
The ceremony also featured remarks from University System of Maryland Regent Yvette Lewis and a video message from Maryland Governor Wes Moore. Musical selections were jointly performed by the Bowie State University choir and Sweden’s Team Putte choir.
During the ceremony, the university posthumously awarded a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership to Clyde Doughty, Jr., former vice president of intercollegiate athletics and recreation, in recognition of his lasting contributions to student success and collegiate athletics. His family accepted the degree on his behalf.
Bowie State also recognized its Golden Graduates, celebrating the Class of 1976 during its 50th reunion. Together with the Class of 1977, the alumni established a scholarship endowment in 2021 that has grown to nearly $57,000, including more than $8,000 raised in the past year to support future students.
