Motivating Change in Others
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
How Do You Help Someone Struggling With Change?
When someone is ambivalent about making an important life change, how do you respond?
- Do you offer advice?
- Do you argue or debate to persuade them?
- Do you become frustrated when those efforts fail and accuse them of being foolish?
There’s a better way to engage respectfully and effectively. By practicing careful listening and allowing the person to identify their own priorities and motivations, we can guide them toward meaningful change.
This session focuses on key communication skills adapted from motivational interviewing, including:
- Asking open-ended questions
- Offering affirmations
- Reflecting on what’s shared
- Summarizing insights
These techniques empower individuals to move from ambivalence to action, fostering positive, self-directed change.
