Biography
Dr. Anita Abedi is an Associate Professor of Bowie State University, who has made substantial contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry. With 25-year experience of teaching and research, she has taught several courses, such as Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organometallic and Biochemistry (class and lab), at the bachelor, master and doctorate level. She has supervised and advised numerous Master’s and doctoral students; and served on more than 30 scientific committees as part of her work with graduate education.
Alongside her academic career, she has executed several industrial and fundamental research projects. In her position as an associate professor, Dr. Abedi is the academic leader in inorganic chemistry’s researches at the BSU. Her research has focused specifically on the antitumor activity of complexes, magnetism and other properties of coordinated compounds. As a chemist, she has specialized in the design and synthesis of novel platinum complexes and gold compounds with applications as proposed anticancer drugs. Dr. Abedi’s work has resulted in more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles with h-index of 20 and I10-index of 34, based on the search logic of Google Scholar.
Research plan: Although platinum-based chemotherapies like cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin remain widely used and effective treatments for many solid tumor types, they have significant problems, including serious side effects such as kidney, liver, nerve, and hearing damage, as well as limited efficacy against certain aggressive cancers like high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). The objective of her research is to develop a product that could treat cancer without the various drawbacks, associated with chemotherapy.
