Field Study Program

 The Thurgood Marshall Library Field Study Program provides students with practical experience in a library setting, enhancing their academic learning through hands-on application of library and information science principles.

Program Structure

  • Field study placements require a minimum commitment of 120 hours per semester.
  • Work schedules can be on-site, remote, or hybrid, depending on the library’s needs and the nature of the work.
  • The student’s tasks and responsibilities must align with learning objectives developed in coordination with the library.

Eligibility

  • Open to students enrolled in an accredited degree or certificate program related to library and information science.
  • Students must be in good academic standing at their home institution.
  • Participants must meet any additional requirements set by the host library.

Student Responsibilities

  • Follow all Thurgood Marshall Library and Bowie State University policies, procedures and professional conduct expectations.
  • Complete assigned projects, tasks and learning activities as outlined in the Field Study Plan.
  • Maintain a log of hours worked, if required by the host library.
  • Communicate regularly with their field study supervisor regarding progress, challenges and support needs.
  • Submit any required evaluations or reports to the host library and their academic institutions.

Host Library Responsibilities

  • Provide structured learning opportunities and hands-on experience relevant to library services.
  • Assign a qualified information professional as the student supervisor.
  • Offer guidance, feedback, and necessary training on library policies, technology and workflows.
  • Complete and submit the student’s performance evaluation at the end of the field study program.

Evaluation and Completion

  • The host library supervisor will evaluate the student’s performance based on agreed-upon learning outcomes.
  • The student must complete a self-assessment and submit it to their academic institution.
  • All required documentation, including final reports or reflections, must be submitted before the program concludes.

Compliance and Termination

  • The host library reserves the right to terminate a student’s participation if they fail to adhere to professional or institutional expectations.
  • Students must maintain confidentiality and comply with any privacy policies related to library records and patron information.
